Our faces go through a lot, from braving the elements of winter, spring, summer, and fall to enduring the many makeup products we experiment with on a daily basis. A good facial cleanser clears away the dirt of the day, while washing away dead skin cells and grime. But with so many facial cleansers on the market today, it’s difficult to know which one to choose. Here are some tips for how to choose the best facial cleanser. 1. Pick the best facial cleanser for your skin type. Whether your skin is normal, oily, dry, or combination, choose the right variety for your skin type. No matter how high quality the cleanser, if it doesn’t match your skin, it’s not going to be effective. 2. Avoid artificial fragrances. Fragrance sourced from floral extracts or other sweet smelling natural sources is just fine. But artificial, synthetic fragrances are often sourced from a variety of chemical sources that are not required to be listed on the ingredients label. It’s best to avoid them entirely because you don’t know how they will interact with your skin. 3. Choose a pH balanced cleanser. Cleansers that are pH balanced match the acidity of your skin. Products that are overly harsh on your skin are usually not pH balanced. How can you tell? First off, it’s usually clearly marked on the label but another indicator is when you accidentally get the product in your eye and it burns horribly. If the cleanser burns and makes your eye turn red, it’s too harsh for your skin as well. 4. Avoid sulfates. Sulfates are notorious for drying out your skin. If your skin feels tight and dry after your cleanse it, sulfates may be the cause. Look for labels that say the product is free of sulfates. Sara Novak is a Natural Health Care Expert for Zax Health.
