We all know that bruises come and go on their own overtime. However, bruises can be painful and unattractive and can be healed quicker using natural remedies.  Here's some scientific evidence on Arnica's effectiveness for a bruise treatment.

The herbal flowering plant known as Arnica Montana has been used for centuries for medicinal purposes to treat a variety of conditions, most commonly bruising. There are two ways the herb can be used; Homeopathic Arnica which is usually taken orally and herbal arnica which is used only externally. Zax's Original Bruise Cream uses herbal arnica for external use only and recommended to apply topically to the skin once a bruise-related injury occurs. Research indicates that herbal Arnica is best used for first aid application for bruises as a result of injuries, bumps and falls.

Arnica contains lactones, and when applied in the herbal format has been shown to act as an anti-inflammatory. The lactones interfere with the bodies production of an inflammatory substance known as Nuclear Factor Kappa Beta (NF-kB) which is responsible for tissue damage resulting in pain and bruising. While bruises usually fade by themselves, there are ways to help the body speed up its healing from a bruise. These anti-inflammatory effects can be absorbed thru the skin and therefore has been found as an effective remedy for bruising.

One randomized, double-blind placebo study showed that when patients with varicose of the legs were given Arnica gel, the Arnica assigned group reported improvements in their symptoms (venous tone, swelling and pain in the legs) versus the placebo group.

In another double-blind randomized controlled study, selected patients bruises were treated with topical 20% arnica ointment versus low concentration vitamin K formulations or white petrolatum). Those treated with the 20% Arnica ointment showed difference in the change of their bruises over the two week period.

A study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2016 reported that patients treated after rhinoplasty surgery with a topical Arnica cream had less bruising and swelling versus those with no treatment.
